Aleena Saleem and Maura Dianno are the dynamic 2024 summer interns who brought their passion for health equity to the forefront during their internship with the Health Equity team at Independence Blue Cross (IBX).
Health equity is more than just a concept for Aleena and Maura; it’s a deep-seated interest that stems from their volunteer work, research at school, and personal life experiences. They understand the importance of providing care that is tailored to each individual, considering their unique backgrounds and circumstances. Their journey begins with actively listening to community members and advocating for their needs.
At IBX, Aleena and Maura had the privilege of working with the Health Equity team on significant projects like planning the 2024 Independence Blue Cross Health Equity Summit and supporting the Regional Coalition to Eliminate Race-Based Medicine. They also gained insights into the impactful work of the Health Equity Advocacy Council (HEAC).
The HEAC comprises dedicated IBX health plan members who convene regularly with the Health Equity team to discuss strategies for achieving more equitable health outcomes within marginalized communities. These discussions provide invaluable insights that assist IBX in addressing healthcare disparities effectively.
Through conversations with eight HEAC members, Aleena and Maura discovered the personal motivations and stories driving their commitment to health equity:
Why Health Equity Matters to Me
From breast cancer survivors to healthcare professionals, each HEAC member brings a unique perspective:
