National Coming Out Day is a special day celebrated annually on October 11. In this piece, I want to delve into the significance of LGBTQIA+ individuals embracing their true identities and the importance of workplaces, families, and communities embracing and supporting us. As we commemorate National Coming Out Day, I will share my own personal journey.
My name is Moxi (she/her). I have been part of Independence Blue Cross (IBX) since 2020, where I have written about health disparities within the LGBTQIA+ community. I came out as transgender (trans) in my late 50s.
The Essence of Coming Out
From a young age, we are conditioned to believe in rigid gender norms and heterosexual standards. These societal expectations dictate how we should act, dress, and who we should be attracted to. However, for many of us, these norms never felt right.
For me, concealing my true self for years was burdensome. But the moment I decided to come out, I made a choice to live authentically and honor my identity, despite societal norms.
The Challenges of Coming Out
Coming out can be daunting due to the prevalent stigma and discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals. Many experience rejection, violence, and abuse, which can have devastating consequences.
Despite these risks, being true to oneself is liberating and fosters a sense of community. It enables individuals to accept themselves and connect with others who share similar experiences.
The Significance of Coming Out
Remaining closeted perpetuates feelings of self-loathing, isolation, and mental health struggles among LGBTQIA+ individuals. Coming out not only alleviates these burdens but also challenges societal narratives and provides hope for others in similar situations.
Personally, since coming out and transitioning, I have experienced immense happiness and peace. Embracing my true self has transformed my life, and I advocate for a more inclusive and accepting society.
The Importance of Acceptance
Being welcomed and valued for who you are is pivotal for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Creating inclusive environments like at IBX promotes diversity, fosters productivity, and enhances overall well-being.
LGBTQIA+ individuals contribute significantly to various fields and enrich society with their unique perspectives. Embracing diversity benefits everyone and paves the way for a more compassionate and inclusive world.
